A Shout Across the Valley
David went into Saul's sleeping camp and took the king's spear and the water jug by his head, but he did not harm the king. Then he crossed over and stood on top of a hill far away; 1 Samuel 26:13 says there was “a great distance” between them. David held the spear but did not use it, and called out across the valley instead. This game joins those two scenes. First you take the spear and jug out of the sleeping camp, then you call out from across the valley. Your voice must reach them, but the soldiers must not.
How to play
- Part 1 · A camp seen from above. Drag David around the breathing circles of the sleepers to reach Saul's head. The circles grow and shrink, so slip through when they are small.
- Part 1 · When you reach Saul, Abishai whispers that they should strike the king. Choose what David answered, take only the spear and jug, and slip out at the bottom.
- Part 2 · Use the slider to choose where David stands. Red areas are within reach of Saul's soldiers, so you cannot call from there.
- Press Shout and the needle on the voice bar swings left and right. Stop it in the green zone and your voice crosses the valley.
- The further away you stand, the louder you must shout, so the green zone moves right. Shout louder into a headwind and a little softer with the wind behind you.
- As the camp wakes up, the soldiers' reach grows, so you must stand further back. Deliver all four calls and Saul answers.
Bible background
When Saul camped in the Wilderness of Ziph with three thousand men to hunt for David, Saul lay sleeping in the middle of the camp with his spear stuck in the ground by his head, and Abner and the people lay all around him (1 Samuel 26:7). Abishai wanted to strike him with the spear, but David stopped him: “Who can stretch out his hand against the LORD’s anointed, and be guiltless?” (verses 8-9). David took only the spear and the jug of water by Saul’s head, and no one saw or knew or woke, because the LORD had put them into a deep sleep (verses 11-12). Then from the top of the hill across the valley he called to Abner, asking why he had not guarded his lord the king, and telling him to see where the king’s spear and water jug were (verses 15-16). Saul knew David’s voice and asked, “Is that your voice, my son David?” (verse 17). David asked what evil he had done and said the king had come out to seek a flea (verse 20). Saul answered, “I have sinned. Return, my son David” (verse 21).
