The Road to Ziklag
David had escaped from Saul twice, yet he said in his heart, “Now I shall perish someday by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape to the land of the Philistines” (1 Samuel 27:1). This game turns that thought into rules. As you move between hideouts in the wilderness of Judah, Saul's search parties follow to the place David just left, and there are more of them each day. Leading six hundred men and their families, you use up food every time you move. The moment you cross the border, the search stops.
How to play
- Part 1 · Tap a neighboring hideout on the map to move the group. Moving uses 2 food and staying uses 1. Staying in the town of Keilah gives you food.
- Part 1 · Search parties come to the place David just left. If one is next to you and you stay put, you are caught and lose a lot of food.
- Part 1 · There are more search parties each day. Cross the western border into Gath while you still have food to finish Part 1.
- Part 2 · On the map of Philistine land, choose the town David will ask for. Turn down the royal city. Choose the right town and you receive Ziklag.
Bible background
The places where David hid are named in the Bible. Four hundred men gathered to him at the cave of Adullam (1 Samuel 22:1-2), he went to the forest of Hereth at the word of the prophet Gad (22:5), he saved the people of Keilah from the Philistines (23:5), and the Ziphites told Saul where David was hiding (23:19). In the Wilderness of Maon, Saul nearly surrounded David (23:25-26), and David also stayed in the strongholds of En Gedi (23:29). At last David crossed over with six hundred men to Achish king of Gath, and Saul did not seek him anymore (27:2-4). David asked not to live in the royal city but in a country town, and Achish gave him Ziklag (27:5-6). David lived in the country of the Philistines one full year and four months (27:7).
